Prof Maepa is a registered Independent Clinical Psychologist with the Health Council of South Africa since 2011, and has been in Private Practice since 2013. She is also a senior lecturer in the Department of Clinical Psychology at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. Prior to working at Sefako Makgatho University, she worked at North West University as a senior lecturer in the Psychology Department and currently serves as a guest lecturer. 

At Sefako Makgatho University, Prof Maepa's work entails the training of Clinical Psychologists and psychiatrists. She is the current course coordinator for the MSc Clinical Psychology Programme. She also serves on various committees in the university.

Prof Maepa's interests in research include mental health, childhood trauma and adolescent mental health, risk-taking behaviour and self-harm, parenting styles, and working with vulnerable populations. She has presented numerous academic papers at national and international conferences and has also published academic articles in scientific journals.
