Prof. Risenga Frank Chauke is a distinguished South African Cardiothoracic Surgery expert, a medical teacher, a leader, and a passionate health equity advocate. With an MBChB from the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA), a Master of Medicine in Cardiothoracic Surgery, an Associate of the Cardiothoracic Surgeons of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and an MBA from the Gordon Institute of Business Science (University of Pretoria), Prof. Chauke's academic journey is not just extensive, but also a testament to his expertise and dedication.
He serves as the Head of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University and Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital complex, where he has been since 2010. Additionally, he is the Deputy Dean of the School of Medicine at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, a role he has held since 2019 and is currently an acting Dean.
Prof. Chauke's contributions to medical education, clinical service, and research are vast. He has supervised numerous postgraduate candidates to completion, authored significart publications, and presented at various national and international conferences. His leadership extends to professional committees and board membership at the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of South Africa, Chair of the Aeromedical Committee Civil Aviation Authority of SA, Chair of the Selection Committee of the Gauteng Health NMFC cohort to Cuba and the Health Professions Council of South Africa, to name a few. He is the past President of the SA Medical Association, serving two terms.
Prof Chauke's commitment to advancing medical knowledge and practice, particularly in health equity, underscores his dedication to improving healthcare outcomes for all. He recently completed Training to Teach Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
